World of Warcraft – Co-operation

Short talks about the cooperation possibilities of the MMORPG by Blizzard Inc. known as World of Warcraft in today's Co-Operation!

Hello Ability Powered, gamers! Playing games with others is special, but can make me anxious. I talked about it recently in the introduction to Co-Operation. Some games turn out to be great while others end up being a real nightmare. Today, we are looking at the game that goes to the roots of Ability Powered’s start up: World of Warcraft.

World of Warcraft is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Play Game which means it was made for group play. There are tons of things to do like adventure on quests, level up via experience points, learn professions, explore dungeons of enemies, and do battlegrounds among about 1,000 other things that I won’t get into right now. Needless to say, it has something for everyone. Cooperation (Co-Op) in this game has really shined to me over the years.

Questing

Seen are two gnomes in a party fishing together in the World of Warcraft.

Questing with a friend actually makes the game a lot easier. Not only are baddies easier to kill when there are two of you, but quest objectives are easier to complete since one kill counts for everyone in the group. Some quests, which require an object to be interacted with, also give credit to everyone in the group when one of you clicks it. This is extremely helpful if the object is difficult to get to.

Another huge perk is the ability to see if your party member has the same quests as you and share any quests that your friend might have overlooked at a town. It is also even better if you grab a few game addons that can help with questing. Some will actually type your quest progress to your party so don’t have to type yourself. There are also addons that will automatically turn in quests which cuts back on unneeded clicking.

Navigating the World of Warcraft

Two players seen flying on the World of Warcraft zone Stranglethorn Vale on a two player mount as pirates.

Navigating the world is easier with a friend too. There are many mounts available that allow one person to drive while the other one rides along. There is also a “follow” option that lets you automatically follow your friend inside buildings or out in the world. If you pair this with user made macros and keybinds, you can actually have a button that will automatically target then follow your friend. Both of these options are so important if you need a second to rest while playing without them needing to wait on you.

Depending on what class you choose, you and your friends can have many more options available such as teleporting each other to cities, moving your character quickly out of danger with class specific spells, or swapping locations with you thanks to the use of certain in-game toys. These can help you get to hard-to-reach treasures or places.

Adjusting Difficulty

World of Warcraft is a heavy player requiring game which ends up becoming a family as seen in this guild family photo.

Another nice thing about World of Warcraft is that you can control the difficulty of certain aspects of the game. For example, if your character wants to complete a dungeon, some can be done with just the two of you once you hit certain higher levels. Raiding also has varying difficulty settings. Looking for Raid is an easy way to see raid story lines without having to stress out over performing mechanics at a high skill level. This let’s all gamers enjoy the game at their own pace!

I actually can’t think of anything made more stressful with a friend in the game. There is plenty to do and you can chose what parts you want to avoid all together. Azeroth is definitely worth checking out if you are looking for an epic adventure with a friend!

Warcraft: Orcs & Humans – Accessibility First Look

Warcraft: Orcs & Humans title menu.

Hello, Ability Powered gamers! Today, we are taking a look at the Blizzard classic: Warcraft: Orcs & Humans. This is the original Real Time Strategy game that led to a beloved franchise that is still alive today.

Starting Warcraft: Orcs & Humans

Warcraft: Orcs & Humans launch menu. Image shows DOSBox prompt.

The game is definitely showing its age. It’s ran through DOSBox which opens this menu asking you to press a keyboard button to continue. You cannot access the On-screen Keyboard once you launch the game. You will need to have other input options available if On-screen Keyboard is something you rely on. I used VoiceAttack voice command and entered “1” to start the game. The game is full screen and the mouse is locked to the window, so On-screen Keyboard isn’t accessible while playing.

Game Options

There are settings for volume and scroll speed. There is also an option for game speed which lets you slow down the game pace incase you need a little extra time to click your troops. As expected from a game this age, there aren’t really that many options.

Gameplay

Warcraft: Orcs & Humans gameplay featuring basic human town.

The game itself is mouse friendly when you start playing. You can point at a unit, click a command to give them, and then click a place on the map. There are also keyboard shortcuts for the commands, “M” to move for example, but they are not remappable.

Accessibility Problems

Warcraft: Orcs & Humans game problems such as voice commands and pathing.

Many problems exist for this older game. When I tried to save my game I ran into issues due to not being able to use On-screen Keyboard. Instead of just picking a save spot you also need to name the save the first time you create one. This is means typing is required. Since voice commands work, I managed to get it to save and exit. Without voice commands, however, I would have been stuck at the very beginning of the game.

Another issue is that the game would go into window mode anytime I tabbed out. While this is good for seeing what other things you have on your desktop, your mouse will still be locked into the game window. The game window is also small depending on your computers resolution.

Warcraft: Orcs & Humans Notes

  • Voice commands do work.
  • On-screen Keyboard does not work.
  • You can’t start the game with just a mouse.
  • Gameplay is point-and-click friendly.
  • You can’t point-and-click to save the first time.

Short seen in her custom World of Warcraft wheelchair as she discusses the accessibility first look for Warcraft: Orcs & HumansI’ve had fun reliving my high school years today. Remember, I played with my mouse and VoiceAttack. Thanks to that I would have been trapped with only a mouse. It definitely shows how far accessibility has come in 25 years!

Spyro Reignited Trilogy Gets Subtitles & Motion Blur Options

Recent news from Activision tells of subtitles and motion blur being added to Spyro Reignited Trilogy

Spyro Reignited Trilogy Brings Accessibility!

Hello, Ability Powered gamers! I have very exciting news for all you Spyro fans out there that play console. There was a patch today from Activison that finally adds subtitles to the new Spyro Reignited Trilogy game. Not only that, but you can now also toggle motion blur on and off to prevent motion sickness! If you remember when the game was released last year, the developers were met with a sea of criticism for not having subtitles at launch. In a statement that blamed lack of industry there was a stand as why it wasn’t included:

“While there’s no industry standard for subtitles, the studio and Activision care about the fans’ experience especially with respect to accessibility for people with different abilities, and will evaluate going forward.”

Improvements from Activision

I am personally glad to see the developers go back and add accessibility. Hopefully they have learned the huge need for accessibility at launch, and will make sure not to forget how important these features are to gamers across the globe. What do you think? Are you excited to see the changes? Do you think the developers learned a lesson from the outcry? Let me know what you think in the comments!
